Bringing Light to Shadows

Symmetric parallel lines of masking tape are strategically stuck around multiple inconspicuous objects in Cubbon Park Metro Station, Bangalore. The cream colored masking tape on the cream colored walls of the station creates amorphous shapes. These barely visible shapes look like shadows of the objects they hide behind.

‘Bringing Light to Shadows’ silently pays homage to the insignificant details of everyday objects amongst the bustle of a city wide art event. Hidden in plain sight, the piece encourages pausing and discovering. The act of finding the artwork becomes elemental to experiencing it.

This site specific installation was created for the ‘Festival of Stories’ at Cubbon Park Metro Station. The week long festival was filled with clusters of stories and abstractions made by many different artists. Overwhelming amounts of artworks filled the spacious areas of the station that were usually empty. Each piece fought for the fleeting attention of the daily commuter.

Limited availability of heavy traffic areas in the station created a competition for prime spaces amongst artists. The bigger and grander the work, the more likely it was to be displayed at a busy junction.
By staying hidden in silent, mundane corners of the station, ‘Bringing Light to Shadows’ uses simplicity and curiosity to give gentle insight to its viewers.

‘Bringing Light to Shadows’ was a temporary installation exhibited for three weeks as part of the ‘Festival of Stories’ in collaboration with Art in Transit and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC).
